Diabetes brings podiatry clinics into focus

The increasing incidence of diabetes in the country has brought podiatry — specialised care for leg and foot — into focus. International healthcare organisations are now looking at opening podiatry clinics in the country and bringing in specialised products.

“Podiatry is still in a nascent stage in the country, but with the higher occurrence of diabetes, both patients as well as medical fraternity are waking up to the need for foot and leg care as a specialisation,” said Kanav Baigra, a Delhi-based podiatrist. At present, the country does not have any podiatry clinic and the total number of podiatrists is less than 100, said Ranjana Walia, marketing director of French insole manufacturer, Boyner Clinic.

Boyner has entered the country with an array of footcare products and plans to open 50 podiatry clinics in all the metros, tier II and III cities within a year. The clinics will be operated by franchisee partners and will need an investment of Rs 16 lakh each. “We find a huge market for podiatric products in the country. Customised products such as insoles are designed to correct several foot, ankle, leg and heel-related problems, apart from diabetics,” said Walia.

World Diabetic Foundation has also tried to address footcare problems related to diabetes by setting up about 100 footcare clinics in India, Nepal, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh. The project named ‘Step by Step’, costing $4,00,000 will have academic support from the International Diabetes Foundation, International Working Group on the Diabetic Foot, Diabetic Foot Society Of India and Muhimbili University College of Health Sciences , Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.

According to K Anupama, a diabetologist with a footcare clinic at Hindu Mission hospital, Chennai, patients with diabetic neuropathy can have foot problems that can end in leg amputation.
